Good Ways to Help Others
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” - Anne Frank
There are many ways and reasons to help other people, so here are a few we recommend. Some are partner charities, and some are just good people that are part of The Cooler's extended family, and we thank you for your support of either.

Stick it to Cancer
On May 5, 2010, the Singheimer family's life changed forever. Their 3 year old daughter, Malena, was diagnosed with Bi-lateral Retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is a very rare childhood cancer, only about 400-500 cases per year. 90% of the cases affect children 5 years old or younger.
On May 14, Malena had to have her right eye removed and started chemo immediately to treat the small tumor in her left eye.
Malena is progressing well and is looking forward to going back to school in August, but her family still needs support.
On Friday, August 20, 2010, The Cooler will hosted a benefit hockey game followed by a family open skate from 8:15-9:15pm put on by Shane Dorfman.
If you didn't make it to the skate but would still like to donate, you can call 770.649.6600 ext.0 with a credit card or bring cash or a check to The Cooler. All money collected will go to the Singheimer family to help with medical bills.
Contact Shane Dorfman with any questions at 404.667.4850.

On December 8, 2009, Ken Roberts was coaching from the bench of the Roswell high school team. He admitted to some of the parents that he was “not feeling 100%” and was planning a visit to the doctor to get it checked out the next day.
24 hours later, Ken was admitted to Northside Hospital. After undergoing a myriad of test, and countless visits with doctors for the two weeks that followed, Ken was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (or kidney cancer).
There is never a good time to get cancer, but it has struck the Roberts with unusual force. The father of 3 boys, Ken is also self employed. Joey, their middle son, is a goalie for the Roswell High School team and the Atlanta Fire.
Hockey’s small world is closing ranks around the Roberts Family. Hockey moms, dads and players all over the area desire to do something, anything to help. If you have wanted to help and just haven’t known how, here is an easy way. Just click on the donate button on this website. Donations can be made with a credit card or through paypal. The donations go directly to the Roberts family and you will receive a receipt for tax purposes. The Roberts family will know that you have donated and will be able to use the funds immediately to help them during this time. Because whatever happens on the ice, when it comes to things that matter, hockey families stick together.
*Update: Ken Roberts passed away on May 4, 2010. Concurrent surgeries and aggressive chemotherapy treatments have left the family in distinct financial distress on top of their great personal tragedy of dealing with Ken's battle with cancer.
If you can help to ease their burden with any financial contribution, you would be assisting in lifting up a family that truly deserves our help.*

"Heart for Africa is a faith-based not-for-profit 501(c)3 charity. Working with our partners in Africa, we provide self sustainable homes for orphans and vulnerable children through long term programs and short term service trips that deliver quality care, shelter, food, water, clothing, health care, social work, mentoring and education.
We currently serve in two countries in Africa; Kenya and Swaziland.
In the past four and a half years, we have had over 4,500 people travel to Africa as part of our program. These people, people just like you, have taken 11 days to go to Africa and see for themselves the challenges of this continent and have made a commitment to making a change in the lives of those they encountered. We believe that while we may not be able to save every life in Africa, that one person at a time, the people of United States can have a serious impact on the lives of millions on this continent."
